Silver, our resident and much loved seal, died on 3 June 2008 after a long illness at the age of nine.

Silver was brought to Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary in June 1999 after being found by a group of schoolchildren abandoned on a beach in Whiteness. She arrived with a crushed pelvis that left her rear flippers completely paralysed, and as a result we could not release her back into the wild.

Silver was always a happy and contented seal, enjoying the attention of the many people who came to see her over the years. She often performed for them, swimming at full speed, or rolling on her back and sinking to the bottom of her pool, and was an expert at diving just as someone was about to take her photograph.

She became unwell due to her long term injuries more than a year ago and since then her health has gradually declined. She finally died on 3 June, peacefully in the pool which had been her home since it was installed in 2003.

Silver will be sadly missed. She brought a great deal of joy to everyone at the sanctuary and the many folk that came to see her.

The  new pool gave Silver more space
where visitors stood and met her
from the safety of the viewing area..

The pool arrives!

The new pool had to be transported on a huge truck to Hillswick.

Hmm, down she goes!

The pool was lifted over the surrounding wall using a small crane.

Positioning the pool.

Trying to get the pool positioned where the hole had been dug.

Lowering the pool.

The pool had to be lowered carefully into the hole.

Bedding In!

The pool close to settling in the final situation.

Being filled with water.

Nearly time to swim.

It's really arrived!

It was exciting seeing the pool becoming a reality for Silver.

Silver's new home!

Getting Silver into her new home was a challenge, but here she is!

Room to swim.

Silver has adjusted to her new home and has space to swim and also to haul out.
