The stones for the circle came from Harry Hunters quarry on Bressay, one of Shetlands many islands.  Ian Roberts a long term friend carved the stones for us and helped us to position and sink them into the ground.

Ian speaking to Jan

Ian explained how we would position and sink the stones.

Checking directions..

We spent over an hour making sure the directions were accurate, marking it all out with buckets.

Buckets marking the positions

Ian digging

Ian had carved the stones for us and is seen here digging.

Pete standing by the seal stone

We took our time ensuring that we accurately placed the stones on the points of the compass. Pete is here standing by the seal stone which is poitioned to True North.

Jan with hammer!

Jan is seen here breaking stones to wedge the standing stones as they were placed into position. She is by the moon stone which is True South.

Figuring out how to move the stones

The first two stones were very difficult to manouever from the wall where they rested whilst being carved. Moving the rest of the stones seemed to develop a flow and a natural energy took over.

Ian and Pete moving a stone

Ian and Pete moved the first two stones and then Luis came and from then on Ian dug the holes while Pete and Luis moved the stones and placed them. Luis did a wonderful job in replacing the turf, like an expert carpet fitter!!

Re-inforcements arrive!

The next day Ivan and Lissie Robertson came to help us place the centre stone/altar. We made a triangle of stones, which will eventually all be quartz, and laid the big stone on the top.

Maria and Luis

Maria and Luis, two of our volunteers came to help this summer from Spain.

Natural balance!

Iain had told us to use three stones to create a triangle and then lay the big one on the top. He said it would find a natural balance which it did!

Resting!

Almost finished, the workers sitting for a photo.

Welcoming the circle

We lit candles for three days to welcome the circle.

Finishing touches

Jan added finishing touches to the circle space.

A dream come true

The circle now stands in the sanctuary garden, a dream come true.

True South

The Southern stone is positioned by the panned willow garden.

Sushi our first baby common seal of the year sadly died on 7/7/07, the day we built the circle. She will always be remembered for after her death the stone circle was born.
