Sanctuary dreams
When Jan started looking after seals in 1987 she was working with
paddling pools, bathtubs and a shed without a roof and no running water
or power. The facilities have improved greatly over the years, but there
is still a long way to go.
Our project in 2010 is to create indoor otter facilities. We lost our
previous otter unit when a neighbouring property changed hands and have
been working with makeshift facilities ever since. Our plan is to
convert an old shed into a purpose built otter house.
Our seal unit is in desperate need of a major overhaul. It was built in
a rush during the Braer oil spill emergency in 1993 and has never fully
served its purpose. We need to demolish the redundant pools and give the
building a complete revamp.
We are working towards creating a wildlife garden to attract birds,
insects and frogs and want to grow more of our own food in the vegetable
patch. There is also talk of a community polytunnel in Lizzie’s Yard
next door, where we planted a wide variety of potatoes last year to help
break up the ground for more planting in 2010.
Our biggest challenge is to renovate Hillswick Cottage, a burnt out
shell of a building, return it to its former glory and use it to support
the sanctuary in some way.
Meanwhile, we dream on……world peace and a healthy, happy planet would be
nice. |
